The animals now realize that Snowball was going against them to the whole time but all they have is what they believe to be true with no actual proof and his secret written documents. Without actual physical evidence their idea is flawed because Snowball could have just written down these ideas without actually following through with his plans.

Douglass uses a pattern of descriptive writing to show the differences between people in different states and communities. He compares the lives of those who live free lives to those who live in the poor conditions of slavery in Maryland. His description of the area and the people highlights the themes of freedom and identity by showing how freedom gives people the opportunity to thrive.

At this point of the story Douglass was finally legally free but still felt weighed down by all the years of slavery. Douglass saying he felt himself a slave shows that his identity was essentially changed even though he was free and could finally have a voice and true identity.

Douglass’ words of fear speaking to the wrong person will lead him into falling into the hands of a kidnapper shows that even though he is free he isn’t safe. He had acknowledged that there were people out in the world looking for those who had escaped slavery. Douglass is essentially saying people of color were treated like animals and hunted down no matter where they were or if they had escaped slavery.

This quote illustrates the theme of rights

Douglass talks about when giving his master money that he had earned, he would be given some cents back. This shows the theme of rights because while the master has control over Douglass and the money, Douglass knows that it is wrong and he should have rights over the money he earned on his own. It is important to understand that Douglass is saying he believes that his master should know that it is wrong and that Douglass is entitled to the money, but that isn’t the truth. This shows that slavery violates basic human rights, taking money that Douglass knew he was entitled to.

Douglass will finally be free but realizes that his past with slavery will always be with him even though he will be free.

Slavery had an extreme and long-lasting effect on those enslaved, so much so that even if they were to gain freedom, the trauma from their pasts would stay with them forever. Douglass explains his feelings of, “the wretchedness of slavery, and the blessedness of freedom, were perpetually before me” (Section 5), showing how he sees both the suffering from slavery and the relief of freedom in his future.
