What does omnipresent mean ?

Let's take a closer look at the word "omnipresent" in the context of the sentence to better understand its meaning.

The sentence reads: "As I graduated from high school and worked my way through college toward a biology degree, HeLa cells were omnipresent."

Now, let's use a Think Aloud to break this down:

First, we notice the word "omnipresent" is used to describe HeLa cells. The author tells us they encountered HeLa cells in various courses like histology, neurology, and pathology, and even used them in experiments. This suggests that HeLa cells were found or mentioned everywhere in the author's studies.

Let's ask ourselves: Does the author use any metaphors to help us determine the meaning of "omnipresent"? Not directly, but the examples of courses and experiments suggest a metaphorical presence everywhere.

Is there any contrasting language in the text? Not in this sentence, but the phrase "But after Mr. Defler, no one mentioned Henrietta" contrasts the omnipresence of the cells with the absence of discussion about the person behind them, Henrietta Lacks.

Are there any additional examples given? Yes, the author lists specific courses and experiments, reinforcing the idea of HeLa cells being present in many areas.

What about the root word? "Omnipresent" has the root "omni," which means "all" or "everywhere," and "present," which means existing or occurring.

By piecing together these clues, we can deduce that "omnipresent" means being present everywhere at once.

Now, I invite you to comment on this Think Aloud or try your own. Let's explore other challenging words or phrases in this text together.

Here's a vocabulary list from this passage:

1. Omnipresent - Present everywhere at the same time.
2. Histology - The study of the microscopic structure of tissues.
3. Neurology - The branch of medicine dealing with the nervous system.
4. Pathology - The science of the causes and effects of diseases.

Now, let's be creative! I invite each of you to write your own replies to this text, using as many words as possible from the word list. Show your knowledge of the words and provide a thoughtful response to the text as you understand it. How do you perceive the omnipresence of HeLa cells in scientific education or their significance?

Important Sentences

1. "Then, matter-of-factly, almost as an afterthought, he said, 'She was a black woman.'"
 - This sentence highlights the casual manner in which Henrietta Lacks's race was mentioned, suggesting that her identity as a Black woman was considered secondary or even irrelevant in the context of discussing her cells. It reflects the historical context of racial attitudes and the marginalization of Black individuals in scientific and medical settings.

2. "He erased her name in one fast swipe and blew the chalk from his hands."
 - This illustrates the erasure of Henrietta Lacks's identity, both literally and metaphorically. Despite her significant contribution to science through her cells, her personal identity was quickly dismissed, symbolizing how her humanity was often overlooked in favor of her biological contributions.

Background Information

Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman whose cancer cells were taken without her consent in 1951 to create the first immortal human cell line, known as HeLa cells. These cells have been instrumental in numerous scientific breakthroughs, including the development of the polio vaccine and advances in cancer research. However, her story raises important ethical questions about consent and the exploitation of Black individuals in medical research.

During the time when Henrietta's cells were first cultured, racial segregation and discrimination were prevalent in the United States, particularly in the medical community. Black patients often received inferior care and had limited access to medical services. The casual mention of her race and the disregard for her name in the classroom setting reflect these broader societal issues.

Henrietta's cells, known as HeLa cells, were indeed remarkable because they defied the norm and didn't die like other cells. Scientists attribute this to a few key factors. First, her cells had a unique ability to divide indefinitely due to a mutation in the gene responsible for cell replication. This mutation allowed them to bypass the normal cellular aging process. Additionally, Henrietta's cancer cells were particularly aggressive, which may have contributed to their rapid and continuous division.

I received no score for the checkpoint 3 storyboard. I received no feedback because none of the work was completed. There were no strengths for this checkpoint. The no feedback shows that none of my work was completed and there was nothing to grade. I didn’t do well in any areas. I need to Improve on completing all my work. This is important because I want a passing grade and I need to complete my work no matter what. My goal for next time is to complete all of the checkpoints. Areas I can improve in for growth includes time management, communication skills and goal setting. Time management would allow me to prioritize tasks and not work close toward deadlines. Communication skills would help improve clarity and constructive criticism. Goal setting would allow me to be motivated and be successful. I struggled with being responsible and being involved. I struggled with completing my part of the project. This rubric feedback allowed me to grow as a writer because it identified my weaknesses. It also allowed me to create a better learning mindset.
I received no score for the checkpoint 2 scene analysis. I received no feedback because none of the work was completed. I didn’t do anything well for this checkpoint. This feedback says that my work was incomplete. I didn’t do anything well during this project checkpoint. I need to improve on completing my projects and communicating. My goal for next time is to complete my work and communicate. I can improve on alot of things. One main thing I can improve on is prioritizing my work from my personal issues. I can also improve on communicating with my teacher. Prioritizing work can lead to success. Communicating with can allow understanding and show responsibility. Next time I’ll make sure to complete my work. This rubric feedback allowed me to understand that when writing about yourself you have to be willing to take fully accountability in order to feel happy about the writer you are. It surprised me that I didn’t prioritize my work as this isn’t like me. It surprised me that I didn’t atleast try to communicate. It surprised me that I didn’t atleast try to communicate with my teacher about my personal issues. Nothin excited me. Nothing confused me about the project.

That space, it’s something else. It’s like every brick in that amphitheater whispers stories of who’s been there before and who it's meant for. When you're one of a few, especially in terms of race and gender, it can feel isolating. But there might be strength you find deep within those moments or from connecting with the other three blacks or the two women there. Those layers you wondered about? They begin to stack, adding depth from experiences then and perspectives now. Wondering if you think about how those first days may shape your understanding as time went on?

This reflects on living in a community full of racism, fear and hate. The burning crucifix shows a symbol of racial hatred and violence towards people of color. The eerie stillness of the night and a sense of the neighbors shows a sense of fear, it shows how society can be scared to intervene in racial issues. Luther was brave and had an immediate response to the situation. This can encourage readers to response to racial issues and injustice happening over the world. It can foster communities to come together. Fighting against hatred can create safer environments.

Luther's experience of finding a Black colleague and building a connection with his family illustrates the human desire for belonging. This fosters a sense of acceptance and ease. "Somebody black in town" highlights the significance of comfort and representation that comes from finding individuals that look like you and share the same cultural background.
To answer your question about how Tim Walz plans to build 3 million new homes, we'll need to look at the specific policies and strategies he has proposed or endorsed. Walz has emphasized a multi-faceted approach to tackle the housing crisis, incorporating federal, state, and local efforts.

First, Walz aims to increase funding for affordable housing projects. This could involve leveraging federal housing grants, state budget allocations, and public-private partnerships. He advocates for expanding tax incentives for developers who build affordable housing units, making it financially viable for them to invest in such projects.

Moreover, Harris's role as Vice President doesn't grant her direct control over firearms regulations and enforcement. These responsibilities mainly fall under the jurisdiction of Congress and state governments. Any claims that Harris's actions alone have led to an increase in illegal guns must be substantiated with specific policies she has enacted or influenced that directly correlate with this rise.

It's also important to consider other factors, such as economic conditions, social unrest, and changes in state-level legislation, which can significantly impact the prevalence of illegal firearms. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic and related economic uncertainties have been linked to a surge in gun purchases and, potentially, illegal gun trafficking.

The illegal gun trade linked to drug cartels is a significant concern, particularly along the U.S.-Mexico border. Drug cartels often acquire firearms through various means, such as straw purchasing (where someone legally eligible buys a gun for someone who isn't), theft, and illegal imports.

When people talk about the illegal gun trade, especially in the context of drug cartels, they're usually referring to the complex and often secretive network through which firearms are smuggled, distributed, and sold outside of legal channels.

You mentioned that Vance is now saying he doesn't support an abortion ban, which seems to contradict some of his previous positions.

Vance is saying that if trump gets reelected we will go back to being affordable

To address Vance’s claim that if Trump gets reelected, the country will go back to being affordable, let's break this down using a fact-checking approach.

First, it's essential to understand what Vance means by "affordable." Typically, this refers to factors like the cost of living, inflation rates, and overall economic conditions. During Trump's presidency, particularly before the COVID-19 pandemic, certain economic indicators such as unemployment rates and stock market performances were strong. However, the pandemic significantly disrupted the economy, leading to increased unemployment and economic instability.

Would you like to see more about how economic indicators have changed from Trump’s presidency to Biden’s administration and what factors influence affordability?

Kamala Harris, as Vice President, does not have the unilateral power to enact housing plans. The power to create and implement housing policy primarily lies with Congress and the President. The Vice President can advocate for housing policies and work with lawmakers to support or oppose specific legislation, but they cannot enact these plans on their own.
