How do different generations handle racial identity? What influences their choices? In the US different generations have had to deal with different aspects of their racial identity . When Dolores E. Johnson was growing up in her household they didn't talk about race. Depending on what you grow up around and being taught you feel a certain way about your racial identity. Her parents didn't talk about race because a lot of racial discrimination has happened during their lives so they ignored it instead of talking about it. The author growing up started to question her race even if it wasn't spoken about in her home she wanted to break those barriers and ask her parents questions that would help her discover more about her identity. What motivates family secret-keeping versus truth-telling? Family secret-keeping occurs due to the belief that Ms. Ella, Johnson’s mother's family, would get harmed negatively. This can be seen when Johnson is speaking to her aunt for the first time. Johnson, in short, states Ms.Ella didn’t want to stay in Indiana due to it being illegal to be with a black man as a white woman, because of this, Ms.Ella left to not make her father lose his job as an electrician, her siblings live to be over and for Johnson’s father to be put in danger because o how racist and hateful people were at the time.
