Mercy Douglass Hospital in Philadelphia is a product of a merger between two historic African American healthcare institutions: Mercy Hospital and Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital. The merger took place in 1948, several years after my retirement. Mercy Hospital was one of the first Black hospitals established in Philadelphia, founded in 1907.
