Question: Will allowing conserved or leased water to be redireceted into the Great Salt Lake actually save the lake or just cost Utahns unnecessarily.
I am for the bill because... not done
Evidence:
-Study estimates that, to to bring the lake back to an ecologically healthy level, within 10 years, humans in the Great Salt Lake basin need to reduce their water use by 35% — 650,000 acre-feet — per year.
-80% of water used agriculture goes towards thirsty crops such as alfalfa and grass hay
-For example, the study calculated that reducing alfalfa production by 61% in the Great Salt Lake basin alongside fallowing half of the basin’s grass hay production would cut agricultural revenues by $97 million each year.
-Due to its shallowness (an average of 14 feet deep and a maximum of 35 feet deep), the water level can fall dramatically during dry years and rise during wet years. (this year has been very dry which is concerning for water levels)
