Dear Kirk A. Cullimore Jr.,
First, I would like to thank you for your public service and for representing my community and me in the Senate. I am a 17-year-old senior currently attending Judge Memorial Catholic High School. I have recently been researching the effects of Utah's rapid urbanization on the Native wildlife.
House Bill 285 was introduced on Capitol Hill earlier this year and would require cities and counties to consider how new buildings and developments might harm local wildlife. This would mean that before construction, cities and counties would have to study the impacts of their proposed infrastructure through consulting the state's Department of Natural Resources and other wildlife experts.
The issue of complete disregard for wildlife and their habitats when building is not new to Utah. Salt Lake City is growing at an unprecedented pace, and in 2023, data reports highlighted how rising temperatures and urbanization are making it far more difficult for Native wildlife to adapt to their changing environments.
I would strongly encourage you to look out for this bill and vote in its favor. You will gain respect from a much younger demographic of upcoming voters, and you would simply be doing the right thing. The biodiversity in our beautiful state is truly something incredible and underappreciated. By helping make this law, you would be helping a wide variety of native species from being outcompeted by dominant species or driven out by the construction of all these new buildings.
Sincerely,
William Trentman

You’ve already got a strong start with your letter; now we can be more targeted to Senator Cullimore specifically.
Here are some resources and angles that can help you appeal to him on HB 285 (“Local Planning and Regulation Impacts on Wildlife Amendments”): (Utah Legislature).
Instead of my writing or rewriting your letter, I’m here to help you shape it: would you like to choose one paragraph of your existing draft (for example, the paragraph where you talk about HB 285) and, using the resources above, decide what one change you want to make to better match Senator Cullimore’s priorities—or, if you’d rather start fresh or work with another source, you can click Continue with AI to keep thinking together here OR go to Create Document to upload a source to read and annotate or to start writing?
