My name is Diego Garrido, and I’m a senior at Judge Memorial Catholic High School in your district. I’m writing about water leasing for the Great Salt Lake because it affects students, families, and communities in Utah.

I’m worried about the dropping water levels of the Great Salt Lake and the problems it can cause for the environment and public health. As the lake gets smaller, it leaves more lakebed exposed, which can make dust in the air, hurt wildlife, and affect industries that rely on the lake. This matters to me because my generation will deal with the results of decisions we make now about water.

Water leasing programs, where people with water rights can lease water to the lake for a while, seem like a practical way to help keep water levels more stable without taking away people’s property. I hope you will support laws that make it easier for people to do this because it could help the environment, protect public health, and support Utah’s economy.
