“A society of equal laws, governed by equality of status and of speech, and of rulers who respect the liberty of their subjects above all else.” (Aurelius, Meditations) Social Justice to me is the fair and equal distribution of rights, goods, opportunities, and merit. Injustice that I have seen around the world is within North Korea, their people are prohibited from seeing actual television, in which is filled with propaganda. Only Kim Jung-Un’s friends are allowed to have actual cars, grown men and women must ride on bikes simply to get to work. Around me I have not seen much issues in terms of injustice. The USA itself gives their citizens enough freedom as is. Society is built on the rational basis of a meritocracy, therefore equality is something that is not given and rather earned. In order to alleviate Social Justice, the beautiful walls hiding the ugly truth must be ripped off in which in most places the citizens are deluded by thinking they truly have control of their country. Society is corrupt in many ways that are not visible to the public. As citizens we must address this in order to alleviate our issues with the government as both presidential candidates have confirmed they are not socialists. Fig. 1. A satirical cartoon of elitism in which the working class and middle class are discarded like trash while most of them can never hope to achieve what the elites have.

The world has invisible elites, and unless you make it high enough in the social structure, being aware of this first is key to change in society. “When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can't tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own - not of the same blood and birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine. And so none of them can hurt me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor can I feel angry at my relative, or hate him. We were born to work together like feet, hands and eyes, like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower. To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are unnatural.” (Aurelius, Meditations) They are able to turn their backs on us in which is unnatural indeed, stated by Aurelius in the quote prior to this sentence. In which they are able to turn their back on the working middle class like they are nothing more than puppets for their control. (see fig. 1) If we want equal distribution of not just goods, but money and rights we must find a way to make a difference rather than continuously doing what they desire us to do. Elitism has existed since the beginning of civilization, but now its blatant and we are doing nothing to stop or alleviate it. While countless people die in several different countries as they continuously just make money for themselves and greedily ignore the public.

Within social justice the fight for equality is prevalent and very common, but equity is the true answer to the issues with political corruption. (see fig. 2) In my convictions and belief of democracy, socialism is something required to meet the needs of the people. Equity completely meets the needs of people because it holds the characteristics of a socialist society while also being a meritocracy. You see those who embrace feminism argue that the WNBA is being paid less simply because they are women. This is a close-minded opinion, lots more people watch the NBA while lots of people around the world also come to America just to play in the NBA. Also, they contain lots more endorsements and sponsorships than the majority of sports excluding soccer. Equity is to give everyone equal opportunities, but when you cannot perform on the level of others do not complain when you see a huge difference in ability. In brief, equity is to be impartial and give equal opportunity to everyone rather than catering to everyone’s lack of ability to perform.

Martin C Martin C (Oct 31 2024 12:40PM) : Comment more

The comment about feminism is controversial but I’d agree as, the benefits of having a WNBA is severely less than the NBA which leads to a lower payment towards female athletes. This supports the idea that it’s a meritocracy under the name of democracy.

The sentiment on WNBA/NBA pay issue is one often used to highlight the sexism present in our society, but I agree with your stance. Equality gives everyone equal opportunities.

Conclusively, Social Justice is based on the rational basis that the world is unfair, non-impartial, and not of equal opportunity. The convictions and the beliefs of the people are extremely important when it comes to handling issues like dictatorship. The people’s ability to fend off, stand up, and speak up when the time comes shows that we are not afraid to protest against leadership. To alleviate the issues that warrant social justice it requires those willing to state their convictions as I have just done within this brief essay. In short, Social Justice is about not only my convictions but the world’s conviction itself. We are only looked at from a big number; the strong must join together before the masses follow in pursuit.
