“I guess the only time people think about social injustice is when it happens to them,” (Charles Bukowski). Essentially, he is stating that people could often overlook the social injustice that occurs in the world. Still, when they experience it, they open their eyes to the problem. Social justice means advocating for the rights of groups that are targets of discrimination and ensuring society treats everyone fairly.

Growing up as a Chinese American, I’ve faced and dealt with many moments where I was a target of racism. For instance, one time in the seventh grade, I was the victim of a hate crime at my school. It was the second week of school, and everyone was leaving to go home. I was walking down the stairs with my friend when I suddenly got pushed down the flight of stairs and tumbled down. I managed to get back up unscathed and got up to see if the person who did it would apologize. Instead, I got laughed at and called a racial slur. This experience made me realize how normalized social injustice is in today's world. Overall, this is why standing up against discrimination is important.

I can relate as an Asian American myself, racism is an ongoing issue that can spiral out of control as the chain of hatred spreads. The normalization of discrimination is both tragic yet expected. This is because many people have lingering hatred about certain minorities whether caused by their parents or from personal experience. This lingering hatred is often spread out into the community creating mobs of hate. This destructive behavior divides us and will slow or even halt our development.

George Orwell's “Animal Farm” is a literary work that deeply resonates with the theme of injustice. This novel illustrates how those in power can exploit others, often using manipulation and fear to maintain control, leading to inequality and discrimination. The pigs’ rise to power mirrors the power structures in our society where certain groups are unfairly privileged over others. When Squealer changes the commandment to “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others,” (Orwell 134). Orwell highlights how language can be twisted to justify unfairness and oppression. This manipulation creates a system where those in power, like Napoleon, maintain control while others are powerless. In the same way that the animals on the farm were oppressed, many groups today, including my own, face discrimination and inequality. Social justice is about speaking up against these imbalances, making sure that no group is silenced or treated unfairly

To me, social justice is standing up for what’s right in our society. On an individual note, I plan to advocate for racial equality and fight for my people. People in this world should be educated about social injustice. I could bring more awareness to the significant amount of stereotypes and racism that are being blindly thrown left and right about my community. For example, I could join some type of social justice organization. I wish for my people to be shown and seen in a better light and in doing so, that’s one step closer to a better world. By making these efforts, we can work toward a future where justice is truly upheld and everyone gets a voice.
