We Must Tackle Asian Hate Before It’s Too Late

As a 10th grader, my understanding of social justice has grown significantly as I have become more aware of the problems that exist in society. Throughout my life, when I was becoming more aware of these problems in our society, a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. helps explain to me what our society has become: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) This quote means that when injustice happens in one place or a group of people, it will spread and threaten justice for everyone else. One form of injustice that has deeply affected me in recent years is Asian hate. After the pandemic, stereotypes on Asians have become worse and had a big impact in our Asian community. Asian hate goes against our purpose in our world which is fairness and equality. This should remind us that justice is something we should actively fight for in our community and world in general.

Asian hate has various forms throughout our history, but it has become worse after the pandemic. During the pandemic era, there have been many reports on hate crimes targeting Asian people. From 2020 to 2021, many verbal and physical harassment have happened towards the Asian community because of the spread of misinformation in social media, where Asians were blamed for creating the pandemic. Political figures such as former President Donald Trump, have public statements referring to the COVID-19 virus as the “China virus” which amplified the public attention of Asian racism, creating an atmosphere of hostility towards Asians. This behavior towards the Asian community reveals a massive issue in our society.

A powerful example of discrimination that relates to Asian hate in one of the literary works I have read is from Animal Farm by George Orwell. In one part of the story when Napoleon, who has the most power in the farm compared to other animals, ask the hens to led him their eggs, the hens refused to do so because it was considered murder, but later on, the hens would be punished for not following Napoleon’s orders. This relates to Asian hate because the hens in this case, would be considered the Asian people while Napoleon would be Donald Trump. The hens are Asian people because they don’t really have a say in the social issue compared to big political figures such as Donald Trump, who has more power and a bigger audience that believes in him which is like Napoleon in Animal Farm. This analogy is summarizing that no matter what you say, whether it is true or not, the person with the most power and audience will always win.

In conclusion, Asian hate is an injustice that has affected many people around the world, including me and those in my community. This is a reminder that social justice requires action to stop problems that exist in our society. As a 10th grader, I want to spread awareness of this issue by educating others about what is true and what is not to avoid any misunderstandings in many communities. By working together as a team, we can make sure that justice will be served, not just for Asians, but for everyone in the world. Only then can we create a world where everyone is equal, regardless of their background or ethnicity.
