“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This quote by Martin Luther King emphasizes the urgency with which we need to address social injustice and how much small acts of injustice can truly impact our society. Social justice, to me, means advocating for equality and the rights of all individuals, ensuring everyone has access to opportunities and paths they deserve. It also involves recognizing the problem and seeing what injustices cause and how they hurt our society. Social justice is essential for creating a fair and equitable society that ensures everyone gets a chance, with access to all the necessary resources.
Living in Philadelphia, one glaring injustice that I see every day is stark wealth disparities. With the large divide between the upper and lower classes, many low-income families face a lack of access to essential resources like health services and education. Schools in lower-income neighborhoods often suffer from inadequate funding, outdated materials, and fewer extracurricular programs that are crucial for a well-rounded education. Without proper access to these basic needs, opportunities are limited, and the cumulative effect perpetuates communities into cycles of poverty. Witnessing this so closely made me realize the importance of providing more equitable access to resources and support for all these low-income communities.

It’s very informative of what happens in a low income neighborhood, however the essay fails to discuss the possible solutions in ending this issue. This is likely because it’s very difficult to solve this without the funding of several people. However, I do believe if we work together, we could prevent this issue from occurring again.
One example of a literary work about social justice is Night by Elie Wiesel. His account of the events of the Holocaust shows the devastating consequences of accepted injustices. It’s a reminder of what horrors a society looks like without social justice and equality. The scenes Wiesel remembers are insights into the extent to which injustices can go, to a point where they are a norm, accepted by society. Something to take away from the book that connects to Martin Luther King’s quote is the importance of standing up in the face of injustice before it escalates and inflicts more pain onto others.
In conclusion, social justice is a pillar on which strong civilizations are built. Societies that are equitable and allow everyone access to all the resources they need give everyone an opportunity to follow their dreams. By educating ourselves and others on injustices and taking action in communities, we can work towards slowly changing civilization to one where everyone stands up for each other, taking action to create a lasting, positive impact on the world.
