“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” said Martin Luther King. Social justice is the even distribution of opportunities and privileges among all people. Some individuals don’t receive as many opportunities as others because of unfair and uncontrollable reasons. The most common of those reasons are discrimination based on race or gender. Social injustice is a problem, but how common can it really be?

In the United States of America, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “63 percent” of adults “report experiencing discrimination every day.” Clearly, injustice is very common among adults, but injustice can be perceived everywhere, even in school. I have experienced injustice throughout my high school journey. Since moving from George Washington High School to Central High School, a couple of teachers and many fellow students have looked down on me like I’m not as smart as them. If another student needs help and I offer to help, they initially think that I won’t be able to help them even if I can. This is wrong and not only affects me but could also could affect the person who needed help. Overall, social injustice is seen throughout life, no matter the age or situation your in. All this needs to change, but how can someone come about doing that?

The initial appearance of an individual can determine the treatment to that person. This is the norm of people who have little interaction with certain other individuals. I agree that it is certainly harmful and difficult but through a certain period of time, we can show our strengths and prove we aren’t whom we appear to be.

Change in a society is not easy but it’s still possible. One effective way to make a positive change for social justice is to protest. Protests are among the most effective ways to make a change in a society. Another way to make change is to raise awareness about the current problems with social justice. The easiest way to do so is to post on social media platforms. Since many people these days are almost addicted to social media, this has the potential to be very influential. Lastly, you can also donate to charities that fight for social justice. Many charities are underfunded and any money could help. In summary, people should not except society today and social justice should be fought for. Now you know how to fight for social justice, but what should we do to enforce positive social justice laws?

I like how you acknowledge that change isn’t easy. I feel that many people think that changing someone’s mindset is simple when in reality its not.

The main problem with achieving justice is that people will know what's right but choose to do wrong. These people aren’t punished or even discouraged effectively enough. This is a problem with an easy solution. First, we can begin to implement fines for constant offenders in the case of social justice. This will help because people will be discouraged to discriminate against other because they will be financially penalized. Next, we could also post about these issues more on social media. Knowing that their actions will be recorded and seen by many people will likely discourage them. Ultimately, certain measures must be taken, so everyone can live in a socially just society.

Based on what I see from the first 2 sentences, you are not specifying what the situation you are talking about. I can infer that you are talking about every single different situation. For example, what if your life is dependent on making that wrong choice for that specific situation? What if someone was smoking for years and you all of a sudden force them to stop because smoking is the wrong choice? That will not only possibly kill the person but could also cause other permanent side effects and make the person miserable.

In conclusion, social justice is a serious problem that doesn’t receive enough attention. Injustice is seen everywhere at any age and affects many people daily. Protest and spreading awareness are the best ways to achieve social justice. Rules should be enforced more rigorously than they are today. How will you make a change?

Najibah C Najibah C (Oct 31 2024 12:56PM) : The statistic "63% of Adults Face Daily Discrimination: Change Is Urgent" is very interesting. more

First of all, the title quite eye catching. Aside from the statistic being very eye catching, it is als very informative. I have seen and heard many times where adults had been treated differently just because of how they looked. It makes me upset to hear about these things. Now, I see that you added your own experience with injustice at Central. It makes me upset to see that even in such a welcoming community, you had experienced injustice. However, this helps prove your point that social injustice is a problem in our society and that it is something that requires change.
