Political debates are good platforms where candidates voice their opinions on key issues, enabling the electorate to realize how they will address problems affecting a nation. The recent debates between DJ Vance and Tim Walz on the seat of the Vice Presidency and that of Donald Trump versus VP Kamala have exposed very important issues such as drug enforcement, immigration, and economic challenges that hit at my heart and that of people I care about.
I am particularly interested in one issue, which is the drug crisis in our country. During the Vice-Presidential debate, DJ Vance accused Vice-Presidential candidate VP Kamala of allowing record amounts of fentanyl into our country, which triggered a broader issue with regard to drug enforcement and border security. This accusation put a very serious issue at center stage; indeed, I have witnessed the ravages of drug addiction on individuals and families in my community. However, drug trafficking and border control are big, multi-agency issues that require a lot of coordination among the agencies involved in order to really make progress on these fronts. Another pressing issue is immigration, which directly affects many people I know. The word "aliens" used by Vance for immigrants sounded very disrespectful and dehumanizing. Such language makes the perception about immigrants hence impacting individual lives and families in their quest for a better life. Words used by politicians can divide or create understanding among people on the topic of immigration. Moreover, during the Presidential debate, Trump made some astonishing statements about immigrants which questioned the reliability of the information politicians utilize in their statements.
This not only affects immigrants but also the communities that comprise them.
Lastly, both debates discussed economic issues such as food and housing costs, and their rise affecting all, including my family and friends. Vance attributed these problems to policies by VP Kamala, which leaves one wondering if the leaders in politics are really concerned about the solutions or just passing the buck. With the cost of living continuing to increase, a lot of people cannot make ends meet, showing that political discourse must concentrate on doable solutions that give the needed support and fair wages. In conclusion, a lot of drug enforcement, immigration, and economic issues are close to my heart because they tend to affect the livelihood of people I hold so dear. These debates do indeed emphasize the importance of reflected discussion, credible information, and an absolute concern for problem-solving in our contemporary society. It is now incumbent upon our political leaders to handle these issues with due seriousness to better the livelihood of all citizens
