“Take the Department of Education and close it” President Donald Trump states on Fox News, on September 18, 2024. When Donald Trump was asked about his plans for the education system his response was very inept. Thereafter his response was followed by him stating that he would shut down plus stop funding schools that teach African American History, along with other subjects. If this plan was to be implemented many futures would be impacted. In this crisis of debate, my future is most important to me so if Trump continues on this won't be the only thing ruining things, not just for me but for many more people. Trump's plans are unethical, and can only do more wrong than good.
The day I reached consciousness, understanding the complexities of the world and my place within it, I understood what it meant and felt like to be a Black African American. During the presidential debate, it was brought up that President Trump said “I didn't know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black” But what exactly makes me and Vice President Kamala Harris black? At first thought, many would say it’s because of the color of our skin, but being a Black African American is deeper than just the color of skin. It can root back to many things in history, even all the way back to the transatlantic slave trade. History shapes us, it's our culture and identity. So how can Trump think so little about the importance of history and race? If Trump succeeds, how will one know who they are and where they come from? Culture will be erased, our history will be gone, and our voices will be silenced as they have been historically.
The implications of Trump's proposed policies threaten the foundation of identity and the future for many. If historical history isn't told, the narratives of where we come from; and who we are will be lost. This is why it’s pivotal that we advocate for a thriving education system that embraces diversity and cultural backgrounds. The following will empower individuals to fully grasp their identities. I carry this heritage and crown of culture and identity, striving for other younger Black African Americans to also fight for their identity.
