Problematic Peace

What comes to your mind when asked the question “What issues matter to you?” I'm sure there’s a lot that comes to mind, but for me personally I think of peace. It’s something we all want, and all deserve. But in current times, it feels as if it’s a myth. There’s always something happening, because peace cannot exist without chaos. Even in the political world. Our peace is left in the hands of those who bring chaos. If debates were more productive, it would benefit us all.

The people who hold responsibility in our peace cannot find a common ground for our wellbeing. Our peace is relying on conflicts of interest. Instead of finding a common ground for us, we’re pinned against each other in political races and debates. They argue and fight for what they believe is right, which is noble but not always effective. During the debate between VP Harris and Trump, and many of the debates that came before it, the end result was not as productive as it could have been due to the way political figures interact and how they negotiate differing viewpoints during debates. The effectiveness of “debating” as a platform for political discourse is being weakened by the human side of political debates, where personalities and strategies can clash and cause ineffective discourse; which is what I witnessed a lot while watching the debate. Both VP Harris & Trump both made claims against each other which placed each other in a negative light. Instead of trying to collaborate and figure out what’s best for the American People. VP Kamala was speaking negatively on Trump's economy instead of trying to help him make a better one with the interest of the American people in mind. Trump mentioned how he believed Kamala didn’t actually have a plan for us, instead of helping her create one for the good of the people. An example of orderly discourse provoking thoughtful conversations is the debate between Vance & Walz. They weren’t yelling at and over each other unlike VP Harris and Trump. They were calm, collected, and could openly share their ideas instead of an attack-defense conversation. They even managed to find common ground multiple times in their statements.

Time and time again, we as the American people find ourselves endangered, or disrupted even due to the actions of those who are supposed to be our leaders. This has stood true throughout history with wars or even civil disputes with the government because the people feel like they aren't getting what’s best for them. Our so-called “leaders” are so focused on competing with each other instead of competing together for their nation. It’s a shame, because it may seem difficult, but it’s an easy fix if we have the right people leading and representing us. They can keep debating and debating all they want, but if they don't change their approach, it’ll cause the end of peace as we know it, and it will be our ruining as a nation. We’ll destroy ourselves from the inside over time. I believe that this can change though. The first step in the right direction would be changing the way we discuss how to progress as a nation, because If debates were more productive, it would benefit us all. Our peace would be protected by those who swore an oath to do so.
