Vertical Farms Synthesis Essay

While vertical farms give access to year-round crops and give life back to places harmed by climate change (source B), the ethical and environmental strain it has could be catastrophic for our future. Not only does vertical farming cost significantly more but it also takes away jobs from farmers and requires copious amounts of continuous energy to survive. These factors make it hard to decide if vertical farms are economically sustainable for what they produce.

Vertical farming uses closed, climate-controlled farms to hydroponically produce fresh fruits and vegetables. These controlled farms can be anywhere from shipping crates to windowless rooms that are soil and energy-powered to replicate outside environments (source D). Just one of these containers costs between $82,000-$85,000 and uses 80 kilowatt-hours of electricity a day. “With this usage comes the emission of about 44,000 pounds of CO2 per container per year, from only electricity and sun replication.” (source D). This poses incredibly high environmental risk and contributes to pollution and climate change on a global scale which is what they are trying to eliminate.

Although, this farming contributes to environmental risks, “it makes it easier for farmers to grow regional and seasonal crops year-round.” (source B). As a result of this, consumers are more likely to continue purchasing these crops without the worry of them being out of season. Vertical farming also gives purpose to discarded infrastructure and uses less land than that of traditional farming (source B).

Scientifically it's hard to outweigh the risks over the benefits. Although vertical farming uses increasing amounts of energy and produces less nutrient-dense food, the investment in land area and artificially controllable climates (source C) have benefited many places around the world. The use of land versus the amount of people that need to be fed has skyrocketed since 2010 making vertical farming beneficial today. (source E)

The use of vertical farming has its benefits and risks no matter what. Ethically and environmentally it isn't sustainable and poses availability to only the high-earning and higher-income class because of its production prices, but overall we can feed more people and continue growing crops that would otherwise die because of climate change. This puts the decision up to you on whether you feel it is important to support vertical farming or not.

To incorporate the use of subordinate clauses into your writing, you can start by examining your existing text. One sentence that already uses a subordinate clause is: “While vertical farms give access to year-round crops and give life back to places harmed by climate change (source B), the ethical and environmental strain it has could be catastrophic for our future.” In this sentence, the phrase “While vertical farms give access to year-round crops” is a subordinate clause that provides additional information about the main clause.

To improve your writing by varying sentence structures with subordinate clauses, you can consider adding more of them to provide depth and complexity to your ideas. For example, you can revise a sentence like: “Vertical farming uses closed, climate-controlled farms to hydroponically produce fresh fruits and vegetables.” by incorporating a subordinate clause to provide more context or detail. You could write: “By utilizing closed, climate-controlled farms, vertical farming is able to hydroponically produce fresh fruits and vegetables, ensuring a controlled environment for optimal growth.”

As your awareness of the use of complex sentences and the subordinate clause grows, you will start to recognize why some writing sounds better than others. When we look at an accomplished author’s writing, we begin to understand why using the subordinate clause is so effective. As you begin to notice these things when you read, you can replicate what great authors do when you write.

I encourage you to edit lines, sentences, and paragraphs in your text. If you are the owner of the document, you can double-click on any sentence or paragraph, edit, and update. By actively incorporating subordinate clauses into your writing, you can enhance the sophistication and clarity of your ideas. Keep practicing and experimenting with different sentence structures to see what works best for conveying your message effectively.

To revise your text focusing on concessive clauses, you can start by looking at the sentence that already includes a concessive clause: “Although, this farming contributes to environmental risks, ‘it makes it easier for farmers to grow regional and seasonal crops year-round.’ (source B).” Here, the phrase “Although this farming contributes to environmental risks” presents a concession before introducing the contrasting idea.

To further enhance the use of concessive clauses in your writing, you might consider adding more instances where you acknowledge opposing viewpoints or conditions. For instance, in the sentence “Scientifically it’s hard to outweigh the risks over the benefits,” you could introduce a concessive clause to provide a counterargument or contrasting perspective. An example could be: “Although scientifically challenging, the benefits of vertical farming continue to outweigh the risks in many contexts.”

As your understanding of concessive clauses deepens, you will become more adept at presenting nuanced arguments and addressing potential counterpoints effectively. By incorporating concessive clauses strategically, you can demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding the topic you are discussing.

I encourage you to review your text, identify opportunities to introduce concessive clauses, and experiment with different ways of incorporating them to strengthen your argument. Keep refining your writing skills by practicing the use of concessive clauses to add depth and sophistication to your ideas.
