Vertical Farms Synthesis Essay

Vertical farming is able to replicate traditional farming while using less land and providing the same nutrients. Vertical farming is important to the future of agriculture by conserving land and water and providing food to more areas. By creating controlled environments to grow produce, those living in urban areas or places that are far from farms are able to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. Although vertical farming does not use direct sunlight, which is an efficient source of energy, Earth’s limited arable land is conserved.

As explained in Source F, by 2050, the estimated world population is 9.5 billion. If produce is only grown through traditional farming, there will not be enough arable land to feed 9.5 billion people. To prevent this, vertical farming can be used to create enough produce to feed the population, while conserving the arable land available. Source E explains that by “building upwards” with vertical farming, the amount of agricultural land is increased.

Vertical farming also allows produce to be grown without pesticides or interference from the outside environment. Source C shows that vertical farms have very high artificial controllability of the weather, while open fields have very low controllability. Having control over the weather and environment in vertical farms can prevent issues that would be caused by storms or other natural events that can happen in open fields. Vertical farming can also control the use of pesticides (Source E). Outbreaks can be monitored and detected early to prevent the other produce from being affected. This prevents contaminating produce that consumers will be eating.

Although it can be costly, vertical farmers are able to produce regional or seasonal crops at any point in the year (Source B). This provides fresher produce to those who would not have access otherwise.

Vertical farming should be used as an alternative to traditional farming whenever possible to conserve viable land for farming and distribute fresher produce to more communities.
