Vertical Farms Essay

As technology advances human necessities become more accessible to those who need it the most. While using the least amount of resources as possible. This has been proven through medicine, tech, our environment and agriculture such as vertical farming. Which has proven to eliminate the biggest obstacles in terms of feeding the planet. In this pivotal time of climate change and our growing population. Although some may argue that the money and materials put into vertical farming aren't worth the costs.

Vertical farms are indoor tech farms that can be grown year-round in all seasonal changes including snow. They can be built anywhere. Such as the desert which is detrimental to areas where people cannot use their land or have the land to grow produce and receive the nutrients they need to survive “for some crops, 10 to 20 times the yield can be obtained per acre in vertical farming compared to open field crops” (Source B) This is an upbringing for families that have suffered from droughts, natural disasters and other land destructing causes. Even if vertical farming is a convenient alternative to traditional farming, it is a high cost investment that may not be worth it in the long run. Shipping contains that vertical farms built in can “cost between $80,000- $85,000 per container” when the food is harvested and packaged it is estimated to be twice as expensive as its organic counterpart when they are released on shelves. Not to mention vertical farming requires a vast amount of energy to operate Source D claims this is “emitting 44,000 pounds of CO2 per container per year, from electricity alone, not counting any additional heating costs. This is vastly more then the emissions it would take to ship the food from someplace else”

Vertical farms also eliminate the use of labor. As they can be built on “45-feet-high-vines whose roots are pathed in nutrient-enhanced rainwater” (Source A) this eliminates the use of labor workers who often experience harsh sun exposure, heat-stroke and other dangerous workplace conditions. Vertical farms would also add to food security by preventing the use of harmful “pesticides and herbicides, contamination by pathogens or heavy metals will no longer be an issue as occurs in rural farming” (Source E) food is carefully inspected so that pathogens and biological contamination do not occur. Which under traditional farming has been difficult to prevent. Such as recent E. E Coli outbreaks in lettuce in cabbage.

Vertical farming is faster grown. In our growing population “An area the size of Brazil is required to feed another 2.7 million people. This amount of arable land is simply not available” (Source F) Our planet has shown to be growing at faster rate than ever compared to the last hundred years. There will no longer be any suitable farming land for agriculture. Vertical farming solves our modern day problems.
