Vertical farms synthesis essay

Vertical farming in a rather recent agricultural phenomenan. It offers farmers the ability to plant and produce crops without soil or sunlight. It increases the convenience of growing in unfavorable environments (Source B) and allows more access to fresh produce in previously inaccessible environments. But at what cost? Does this new farming method utilize more resources than it ought? Does it needlessly impact it’s environmental surroundings in a wasteful and negative way? Not without nuance, I argue that the environmental consequences of this technology are worth the benefitis for this rapidly evolving farming method.

According to Source B, vertical farming, for some crops, offers 10 to 20 tiemes the yield opposed to its traditional open-field counterpart. It has a more efficient production rate than traditional farming methods. Although, according to Source C, vertical farming’s initial investment per unit land is much higher than its open field counterpart, this financial risk offers a much higher reward and yield than conventional farming techniques, as also noted in Source C. Contrary to the opinion of Jonathan Foley from Source D, this financial investment is more meritable and rewarding due to its high output rate compared to traditional farming.

Financially, vertical farming is worth the effort. But what of the environmental repercussions? Vertical farming transforms environments for the benefit of the environment. Vertical farming utilizes abandoned warehouses and shipping containers and repurposes them. As in Source B, it elevates and transforms those environments to a higher purpose with more use and function. It also takes up nowhere near as much acreage as traditional farming- something we will need to be considerate of in the future.

According to source F, the amount of arable land that we need to produce for the growing population of the world (a predicted additional 2.7 Billion people) is not available. Therefore we need more environmentally and spacially sensitive alternatives to produce our food. Vertical farming is financially more rewarding with its high output and more environmentally rewarding with the less space it takes to produce.
