vertical farming

I believe that the use of the vertical farming method can be an efficient and less land-destructive way of growing and providing food in the future. In source B, Kai-Shu Ling, a research plant pathologist speaks about the overall benefits of vertical farming and how it can greatly change the way of=ur food is grown in the future, for the better. Kai-Shu Ling says, “vertical farming allows growers to grow regional or seasonal crops indoors year-round. They can grow crops anywhere a greenhouse or controlled environment can be established.” Due to the variety of crops being able to be grown in a diverse range of areas, people living in urban locations can have increased access to fresher and potentially more nutritious produce.

In source E, there are many factors of evidence reviewing the benefits of the vertical farming method by describing the advancements from a climate-control and environmental conscious [perspective. Referring to one of the most attractive features of vertical farming, CGGG food production, the article says, “This aspect is less price sensitive to affluent customers in high demand countries such as china. All year round crop production without seasonality, in a climate controlled environment”. This take on vertical farming explores one of the possible obstacles to this new way of creating agriculture may be the initial fear of consuming food that is the product of something strange or unknown as it is new. While I disagree with this viewpoint I can respect this aspect of concern. While new technologies can always be unknown and possibly frightening, there is a general risk involved with anything new. While vertical farming may be one of these unknown things, it is likely that something will fail to go as planned as with anything, but with constant trials and techniques, success is probable.

In source F, a graph depicts the ratios of arable land on Earth that are suitable for growing crops as well as the world population and projected world population. The depiction on the left describes that the size of the continent of South America is roughly equivalent to the arable land, or farming suitable land on Earth, being about 80%. On the right side of the depiction it describes that in order to feed about 2.7 billion people, an area of farming land about the size of Brazil would be required to attain and achieve this. Due to this amount of farming land not being available, it is very likely that it will not be long before we run out of food, which has been evident in many other countries. In order to counteract this inability to feed this population, a new and more efficient way of farming is necessary, such as the vertical farming method.

Popularizing vertical farming amongst methods of growing agriculture can help make fresh crops available to larger populations and optimize the amount of land that is being used for farming.
