To put it frankly, we don’t have enough arable land. Tere is not enough land on planet Earth to sustainably grow and produce food for the steadily growing human population (Source F). Vertical farms can serve as a solution to this problem. According to Source E, “...the effective arable area for crops can be increased by constructing a high-rise building with many levels on the same footprint of land.” Vertical farms can bring value to the future of agriculture by enabling groups to grow food in scenarios in which they otherwise wouldn’t be able to.
When assessing the value that vertical farms can bring to the future of agriculture, you have to consider two things: people and food. Vertical farms can provide food to people that wouldn’t otherwise wouldn’t have access to sustenance prior to the utilization of vertical farming. It’s mentioned in the Severson article that vertical farms can be established. “almost anywhere.” This unique characteristic of vertical farms is especially important in arid and dry areas where growing crops traditionally just wouldn’t be possible. In areas and climates where crops can’t be grown traditionally, vertical farms can feed people who wouldn’t have been able to eat otherwise.
While vertical farms can probide value in areas where fresh crops aren’t readily available, I don’t think vertical farming should entirely replace traditional farming methods. In Source D, the “Huge costs,” of vertical farming are mentioned. According to Source D, these vertical farms are wildly energetically inefficient, with each container producing 44,000 pounds of CO2 per year.
These two methods of traditional and vertical farming can coexist and be utilized at different times in different scenarios where the circumstances would call for vertical or traditional farming. It’s important to understand how many people vertical farming will help and how many starving individuals will be able to eat and live properly with the invention of vertical farming. If you can eliminate the worries about eating for people in developing countries and developing areas, you can open up the door to make more strides in the further development of the world.

To improve your use of subordinate clauses, let’s first look at your text for an example. In your text, the sentence “According to Source E, ‘…the effective arable area for crops can be increased by constructing a high-rise building with many levels on the same footprint of land’” includes a subordinate clause starting with “According to Source E.” This clause provides additional information about the source of the information presented.
Now, let’s incorporate a concessive clause into your writing to add complexity and sophistication. A concessive clause can be used to introduce a contrasting idea or make a concession in an argument. For example, you could say: “While there may not be enough arable land available, vertical farms offer a promising solution to this challenge.” In this sentence, the concessive clause “While there may not be enough arable land available” presents a concession, setting up the main idea that follows.
By incorporating concessive clauses like this, you can add depth and complexity to your writing. They allow you to acknowledge opposing viewpoints or challenges while still presenting your main argument or solution. This can make your writing more nuanced and engaging for your readers.
As your awareness of the use of complex sentences and the subordinate clause grows, you will start to recognize why some writing sounds better than others. When we look at an accomplished author’s writing, we begin to understand why using the subordinate clause is so effective. As you begin to notice these things when you read, you can replicate what great authors do when you write.
I encourage you to edit lines, sentences, and paragraphs in your text. If you are the owner of the document, you can double-click on any sentence or paragraph, edit and update. Keep practicing incorporating different types of subordinate clauses, including concessive clauses, to enhance the sophistication and clarity of your writing.
