Iridescence occurs when the material that the light hits acts like a prism. It splits all of the light into a bunch of different colors that go in a bunch of different directions. Another way that iridescence can occur is when the material is multi-layered and the light will refract across the surface. Both of these ways cause iridescence to occur because different light wavelengths will run into each other causing us to only see certain light colors if we look at it at certain directions.

Title: Annotations
When light is exposed to a material the electrons in the material get excited and they will jump up and down different evergy levels and this emits light. For materials that are iridescent these materials will sometimes not emit a light of a certain wavelength or it will and other wavelengths inhibit each other. This is added to the affetc of light waves canclled each other when they diffract across a surface.
