My question that I am answering: What is the average age of retirement in the NBA?

From these two websites that I looked at the average age of retirement in the NBA is between 27-28. To be exact it was 27.8 between 2010-2020 so it might have changed in the past couple of years but probably not by too much. I personally believe that the average age of retirement will go up a little bit and hover there as players are able to play longer and longer because of advancements in technology to keep players healthier and in better shape for longer. The reason it is lower than you would expect is because some players only stay in the NBA for a couple years before being cut and never making it back into the league. For players that play more than 5 seasons the actual age is 33 which to me seems a lot more accurate at least for players who get meaningful minutes. The reason why players retire can vary in a number of ways depending on position, weight, and how much they train their body. Old age is the number one reason why players retire who have been in the league for a long time but there are other things too. Typically bigger players like centers and power forwards retire earlier than smaller guards because they put so much stress on their body and their joints and ligaments are more prone to wear and tear. I think that the best way to avoid retiring due to injury or old age is to be a smaller shooter like Curry or Chris Paul as they don't have to rely on being physical as much as centers and power forwards and are also not as heavy.
