Will Utah ever have an NFL team?
Although plans have yet to bring an expansion franchise to Utah, there is hope for the future. Salt Lake City is one of the cities most due for a team, and the constantly expanding and growing market in Salt Lake makes it an ideal location. Residents in Utah have proven an interest in professional and collegiate-level sports, often packing Delta Center to watch the Utah Jazz, or bringing the noise to a Utah Football game at Rice Eccles Stadium. An NFL stadium would need a larger audience, but there is no doubt that the audience would show up. Adding an NFL team to the west would not only create a natural rivalry with teams like Denver and Las Vegas, but help expand the league and push certain teams into more distinct divisions. I believe Utah will eventually franchise an NFL team, especially considering plans involving hockey and baseball in the area.
Possible Problems (Annotations):
Salt Lake City would be one of the smaller cities with an NFL team but could make it work. Most NFL teams these days are situated in larger, more populated cities than Salt Lake, but a city like Jacksonville shows the potential for smaller locations. Salt Lake City does lack the appropriate space needed for an NFL stadium, which would be a problem. There is possible space out at the DMV and fairgrounds, but further research would need to be done.
