The United States is a place where there are a lot of cultures and identities stemming from roots in immigration. This is a great thing, and we can promote diversity and inclusion while also learning about different people. It can also mean a lot of people are lost, and don’t know who they are or what their identity is. Sonia Sotomayor tries to help many people find their identity in ther speech at the University of California, Berkeley, School of law in 2001. In her speech, she uses diction, her background, and repetition to convey a message about identity.

Sotomayor uses diction, particularly certain Spanish words, to appeal to her audience and set a background dor herself. She uses food she likes such as “morcilla” (pig intestines), and “la lengua y orejas de cuchifrito” (pigs tongue and ears) to make a connection to her weird tastes and differences between hers and other American cultures. She also uses words like games she liked at family gatherings, such as “loteria” (bingo), to highlight possible similarities with her audience.

As well as making a connection with her audience with diction, she also uses these words to set her background. In the first three paragraphs, or first forty lines, Sotomayor sets her background by explaining where she is from, her gratefulness to her parents for moving to the United States, and how she grew uo in a Puerto-Rican culture. She uses this background and the authority of her position to connect with many individuals at the law school. She says that these experiences made her what she is today.

Sotomayor also uses repetition to emphasize her identity, particularly by restating the word “identity” four times. She does this because she is very sure of ther own identity. She is a latina. She says that Puerto Rucans are not historically Latin American, but she strongly identifies with her Latina ancestry. Her main point is that there are so many cultures in the United States, and identity is not given to an individual, but chosen by the individual.
