United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, uses words of identity, Spanish translations, and metaphors to encourage the audience to embrace diversity in their own lives.
Throughout the text, Sonia uses words of identity to describe herself and the people around her. She starts off with the question, “Who am I?”, and then describes herself as being “Newyorkfican”, “Latina”, and “Puertorriquena” as well as describing other as “Puerto Rican”, “Spanish”, “Caribbean”, “Latin American”, and “Mexican American” throughout the rest of the speech. Sonia wants these terms of identity to resonate with her audience and for them to be comfortable to describe themselves with these terms. Sonia wants to show the audience how everyone has their own identity and should be proud of it.

Along with describing her own identity, she brings in parts of her own life into the speech. Sonia describes the food that is a part of her identity in Spanish; “Mucho platos de arroz, gandules y pernil” and “la lengua y orejas de cuchifrito.” She decides to say these dishes in Spanish along with the English translation to show how these traditions started outside the US and have been transformed into her American lifestyle. Sonia also shares some of her culture to hopefully get the listener to be comfortable to embrace their own culture.
Aside from how she embraces her own culture, she reflects on how America as a whole embraces its culture. Sonia uses metaphors, “the melting pot” and “the salad bowl”, to show how she wants America to be one day. Sonia uses metaphors as a way to explain to her audeince in simple terms the different states of America history. Early America was described as a “melting pot” where anyone can come in and be equal to and the same as everyone else as a pot of sauce is, but this where Sonia disagrees. She hopes America can be more like a “salad bowl” where everyone is together and equal but our differences are embraced and celebrated together.
