We chose the excerpt because we think that this is one of the most important moments in the book. Ella was originally so scared that her family wouldn't accept her having a mixed child that she told Johnson to tell her family that she’s dead. Hence the book title. But here we see that Ella’s sister was much more concerned about her death of her sister, rather than the race of her niece.
This is important because leading up to this point, Dolores was kind of concerned about whether or not her white family would accept her or not. When she finds out they do, she continues exploring her journey for finding her ancestry and discovering the family's lost secrets.
The key themes and ideas Johnson is having are empathy, shared pain, and hope. This section shows Johnson's overwhelming sense of hardship that her search for family has brought to all people concerned. She struggles with regret for tricking Dorothy, but she also acknowledges that all sides of the family have suffered and feels accountable for her feelings. Johnson, however, learns that her aunt and her white side would be accepting and not shame her black side.
