At the beginning of the passage, Sotomayor situates her as a "Neuyorkrican" to explain that she’s a "burn and bread New Yorker of Puerto Ricon-born parents who can to the States during World War II." The historical evidence references immediately grounds her identity in legacy of migration and adaptation. Sotomayor's description of her families' success in America- her parents' determination to make a better life; her own rise of nation's, highest court-establishes a tone of pride and gratitude.
One of the most striking rhetorical techniques Sotomayor empolys is her extensive use of sensory details, especially when she discusses food. By placing her narrative against the broader historical backdrop, she asserts the legitimacy and depth of Puerto Rico American identity. Furthermore, she also references metaphor like the "melting point" and "salad bowl" to reflect on the tention between assimiationlation and the maintaining identities.
