Super Bowl 2025 was definitely a game to remember. The Philadelphia Eagles took down the Kansas City Chiefs in a dominant 40-22 win, ending the Chiefs’ hopes for a three-peat. Jalen Hurts played an incredible game, and the Eagles’ defense kept Patrick Mahomes under pressure all night. I was a little disappointed that the Chiefs’ defense didn’t let Saquon shine, but as long as we got the win, I couldn’t complain. Of course, I ended the night on Broad Street, surrounded by a whole bunch of Eagles fans, and it was an unforgettable experience. But as exciting as the game was, the commercials were just as big of a deal. Every year, companies drop millions of dollars on these ads, trying to make a lasting impression. Some were funny, some were emotional, and some—like the Hims & Hers weight-loss commercial—sparked a lot of controversy.
The Hims & Hers ad, called "Sick of the System," focused on obesity in America. It claimed that the healthcare industry makes it too difficult for people to get help with weight loss because it prioritizes profits over real solutions. The ad was dramatic and emotional, making it clear that many people feel frustrated by their weight-loss journey. Hims & Hers presented their own medication as a more affordable, doctor-approved alternative. At first, I thought the ad was pretty powerful, but after seeing the backlash, I understood why some people were upset.
The biggest issue was that the ad might have been misleading. U.S. senators and health experts argued that it didn’t provide enough information about side effects and safety risks, which are normally required in prescription drug ads. The Wall Street Journal reported that Hims & Hers’ weight-loss medication is actually a compounded version of existing drugs, which means it isn’t FDA-approved in the same way as name-brand versions. Some people worried that the company was taking advantage of the hype around weight-loss drugs without being completely upfront about the risks.
Hims & Hers defended the ad by saying it followed the rules for "help-seeking" commercials, which don’t have to list medical risks since they aren’t directly advertising a specific drug. I can see both sides of the argument. On one hand, obesity is a serious issue, and making weight-loss solutions more accessible is important. But at the same time, companies have a responsibility to be honest and transparent, especially when it comes to health.
Thinking back, this controversy made me realize how powerful Super Bowl ads can be. People watch them expecting to be entertained, but sometimes they spark real debates about important topics. The Hims & Hers commercial definitely got people talking, whether they saw it as helpful or harmful. Either way, it was one of the most talked-about ads of the night, and it showed how complicated health advertising can be.
