I’m glad the Eagles won; GO BIRDS!!!! Philly went wild when we won; that's how you know we love our team. But besides that, let’s talk about the half-time show with Kendrick Lamar, the fantastic performance by him and SZA with the feature. But I really want to talk about the start of it when Samuel L. Jackson was dressed up as Uncle Sam, which I think could have been related to a character (Stephen) he played in Django. As Kendrick was about to show, Samuel opened with, “Salutations it's your Uncle Sam.. and this is the Great American game.” And after he performed the song "Squabble Up," Jackson said "Too loud, too reckless, too ghetto," The character he plays critiques Kendrick’s performance, saying his songs aren't fit for the Super Bowl. However, he stood his ground and continued to perform his authentic tracks.
An article I found by Charles Papadopoulos posted on Screen Rant, “Samuel L. Jackson's Role In Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl Halftime Show Explained: Why He Played Uncle Sam.” Helped my thinking “Jackson's role as Uncle Sam that his character sounds like Stephen, as in both cases, he's playing a Black man who works against his own race in order to thrive in American society. His Uncle Sam character is a representation of the typical Super Bowl half-time show performer, offering vibrancy and patriotism to contrast with Kendrick Lamar's subtle and understated performance. This is partially for Kendrick to acknowledge that he's not J-Lo or Rihanna and that his showmanship will offer a measured, more particular meaning instead.”
