Problem Solution Essay Update

Voter turnout among young people is relatively low among all states. Voter turnout is important but the infomration people have when voting is what matters the most. While many states require a civics course to be taken in high school, there are some outliers. States that have more civics courses as a requirement may have more informed voters, but the correlation between the two is not clear. Maryland is very good about civic education starting from elementary school. They do a great job at teaching about the importance of voting and getting youth engaged. They even allow 16 year olds to vote in local and state elections. Businesses like Snapchat have also encouraged teens to register to vote by sending them a message through the app. While there are some great things being done to get young people voting, there is so much more that still needs to be done to create educated, informed voters who are active in their communities.

I have thought some more about my topic, and I have begun to feel more and more frustrated by the lack of education about US civics and politics in the Untied States. I think that civics classes are important and all states should require them, but I also think that what is being taught and the standards of these courses needs to be reevaluated. I think students should be challenged by tough questions and issues in the classroom so they are ready to apply those skills when making an important decision of who to vote for. After reading more from George Orwell's 1984, I have realized that I need to acknowledge and talk more about what is already being done about this issue. In 1984, the book is generally written from a pessimistic perspective, but I have noticed that there are glimmers of positivity scattered throughout. I know that I need to focus on both what is going well and what needs improvement in order for my essay to be enticing. I am very interested in my question and by the research that is available to me.
