Dr. Wilbur H. Strickland (1903–1987) was a distinguished African American physician who played a pivotal role in the history of Mercy-Douglass Hospital in Philadelphia. After earning his medical degree from Howard University and completing postgraduate studies at institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, and Harvard University, Dr. Strickland practiced medicine in Philadelphia. He held teaching positions at Temple University and Philadelphia General Hospitals and served on the staffs of Mercy and Douglass Hospitals. In 1948, following the merger of these two hospitals, he became the first Medical Director of the newly formed Mercy-Douglass Hospital.
