Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens was a pioneering African American physician who made significant contributions to women's health, particularly in obstetrics and gynecology. Helen O. Dickens - A Biography About Her Life
In a 1988 interview, she said, "I got it into my head that if I were going to be a nurse, I might as well be a doctor"8. Recalling her time at Aspiranto Health Home, she stated, "It was very exciting. You were going into the homes. You were seeing all these people. You were taking responsibility for care of people"
She trained over 200 Black physicians in performing and interpreting pap smears by 1965. In 1965, she drew a crowd of 250 women to St Charles Borromeo Hall Parish in South Philadelphia to receive pap smears.
