The Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program is a U.S. military initiative that started in 2017 with the goal of replacing the 5.56mm M4 carbine, M249 SAW light machine gun, and 7.62mm M240 machine gun. The program involves developing new 6.8mm cartridges and advanced fire-control systems for these weapons.
After a competitive process involving seven defense manufacturers, the winners were announced in 2022:
SIG Sauer to produce the XM7 rifle and XM250 automatic rifle.
Vortex Optics to create the XM157 fire-control system.
Winchester to produce the custom 6.8mm ammunition cartridges.
The new weapons aim to improve accuracy, range, lethality, and overall performance compared to their predecessors. The U.S. Army intends to procure over 100,000 M7 rifles, 13,000 M250 machine guns, and 124,000 fire control systems throughout the program's duration.
