Weapons Description: The NGSW system includes the XM7 Rifle and XM250 Automatic Rifle, which will replace the M4/M4A1 carbine and M249 Squad Automatic Rifle. Both weapons use 6.8mm ammunition and are equipped with the XM157 Fire Control system. The XM7 is fielded with seven 20-round magazines, and the XM250 is fielded with a 50- or 100-round fabric ammo pouch.
Mission: The NGSW system will be employed against enemy personnel and small unit formations in various environments, including urban and rural settings. It will support multiple combat operations, such as movement to contact, attack, defense, reconnaissance patrol, entering and clearing buildings, and more.
Program: The NGSW program is divided into two acquisition programs: rapid fielding of the weapons and rapid fielding of the fire control system. The Army plans to field these systems starting in the second quarter of FY24 and will conduct testing and assessments to support fielding decisions.
Testing and Performance: The Army conducted developmental and lethality assessments of the NGSW system in FY23. Further testing, including a Limited User Test (LUT) and operational assessment, is planned for FY24 and FY25. The program aims to evaluate the operational effectiveness, lethality, suitability, and cyber survivability of the NGSW system.
Recommendations: The Army should submit an operational test plan for the FY25 operational assessment and provide a test strategy to evaluate the capability to stow the weapons and the effect on crew members' ability to ingress/egress on major weapons platforms.
