Are Electric Vehicles Definitely Better for the Climate than Gas-Powered Cars?

The percentage of electric vehicle (EV) sales compared to the rest of the market is in the double digits and continues to grow. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in the third quarter of last year, EVs accounted for 21.2% of all new vehicle sales. In 2021, that number was 2.7%.

2There are all-new electric vehicles going on sale every year, and more are coming. As a sign of the times, of the 10 best-selling EVs in the U.S., only three models you see on this list were here two years ago. Not only are there more new models, but they are highly competitive, more affordable, and have struck a chord with shoppers. And with ranges that are as good as non-hybrid cars and standardized charging plug choices, these EVs are becoming easier to live with on a day-to-day basis. Most charging stations can accommodate CCS and NACS connectors, as those two are the industry standards — and there are more charging stations than ever before. Road trips in an electric car are no longer a fingers-crossed affair.

3So which vehicles are the best-sellers? We’ve compiled the best-selling EVs of the 2024 calendar year, based on parent company Cox Automotive data. As you would expect, Tesla still reigns supreme.

41. Tesla Model Y

5Total units sold: 372,613

6Tesla’s compact SUV has up to 337 miles of range and room for five passengers. In 2024, this was the second-best-selling SUV in America after the Toyota RAV4. Its starting price of $43,990 isn’t the lowest price in the segment, but its impressive range and excellent tech in the cabin make the Model Y a popular choice. 72. Tesla Model 3

8Total units sold: 189,903

9In second place is the Tesla Model 3, which shares platforms with the Model Y. And even though Tesla’s sales fell in 2024, the Model Y and Model 3 are head and shoulders above the competition. The Model 3 sold over 100,000 more vehicles than the next vehicle on this list. That’s an impressive feat but not surprising considering that Tesla had a huge head start in the EV world over traditional automakers. 103. Ford Mustang Mach-E

12There’s almost always some controversy when an automaker repurposes a classic name in a new way. Yes, this is an SUV and an EV, and it has Mustang in its name. But look beyond that and see what the Mustang Mach-E offers. It is quick, roomy, and provides up to 320 miles of range. And it’s surprising how well the Mustang design cues work on an SUV body. 134. Hyundai Ioniq 5

15The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has the practicality, range, features, and fun to appeal to a broad spectrum of shoppers — even ones that might not have considered EVs before. With up to 318 miles of range, a roomy interior, and loads of tech that comes standard, the Ioniq 5 is a great value. There’s even a high-performance N version that’ll knock your socks off. 165. Tesla Cybertruck

18Controversial? You bet. Powerful and fast? Yes, the Tesla Cybertruck is that too. This truck also offers off-road capability and a Tesla-estimated range of 445 miles with a range extender — but not necessarily at the same time. Attributes like 600 horsepower, an adaptive air suspension with up to 12 inches of travel, 17 inches of ground clearance, and rear-wheel steering would pique the interest of plenty of truck shoppers. 196. Ford F-150 Lightning

21The Ford F-150 Lightning’s name says it all — this is an F-150 first, an electric truck second. That means that capability, including towing and off-roading, performance, and features have to meet the expectations of a Ford F-150 buyer. And they do. With up to 580 hp, a 10,000-pound towing capacity, a 2,235-pound payload capacity, and a quiet, feature-filled cabin, the Lightning is essentially an F-150 that doesn’t need gas. 227. Honda Prologue

24The Prologue is the first electric SUV from Honda. This 5-passenger midsize SUV has a range of up to 296 miles, and all-wheel drive (AWD) is available. The Prologue comes standard with an 11.3-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver assist features. 258. Chevrolet Equinox EV

27Chevrolet’s all-new Equinox EV, which is longer and wider than its gas-powered sibling, is roomy, comfortable, and is an EV that is very easy to recommend. It has up to 319 miles of range, an easy-to-reconfigure interior, and loads of safety and entertainment tech. 289. Cadillac Lyriq

30The Cadillac Lyriq is a solid all-around luxury EV SUV, with a comfortable ride and an upscale, high-tech interior. It also has up to 515 hp or up to 326 miles of range, depending on the powertrain. The Lyriq is available with SuperCruise, which is arguably the best hands-free driving system out there. 33Shoppers who are looking for an off-road-capable, powerful all-electric SUV should consider the Rivian R1S. It’s fun to drive on road, starting at 533 hp, and has up to 410 miles of range. Its air suspension helps keep the highway ride comfortable, but off-road it can add up to 5.5 inches of ground clearance. It has a one-pedal function for tight maneuvers when off-roading, and it can wade through three feet of water.
