Week 5 Summary
This article was about the forgotten purpose of civics eduation in public schools. It details issues in the cirriculum that are stopping students from learning what it truly means to be an American. Civics education has been overlooked by the education system in recent years, as education in english, math, and science become more favorable. The article also highlights inequality issues present in our education system, which reflects on minority groups who have historically had less voter turnout than wealthy white people. We are just now starting to realize that reading from a book does no good for this type of education. Students will be more engaged in the topic is to pretend like they are already voters. In some schools, they do things like voting on a class color, and doing mock legislation so the students can see how things work. Mock trial is another way for students to understand how the judicial branch of government operates. Community service can also play a role, and the article cites that students who have participated in community service are more likely to vote. In the midst of a crisis, there is still hop for civics eduation in the United States.
