Article 5 summary (Let Grow)

I liked this article because it was more of an opinion piece coming from a teacher in a public school. This article talks about how it is important for students to be learning about civics. It says that schools should not eliminate civics courses in favor of math and science courses which many deem to be more successful career paths. It goes as far to say that our democracy is threatened by the lack of civics courses because people are not encouraged to vote, and they don’t know how to do the research on political topics and candidates. This article brings another viewpoint: that teaching civics is not teaching politics, which is a common misconception. The goal of civics classes is not to tell students to stand with a particular party or believe in a particular political ideology, it is to teach citizens about how to be an active person in the country’s government. The classes should hopefully show students how to find their own political ideology and that they should support whoever they deem to be fit.
