Salt Lake City believes everyone in need should be treated with dignity and have access to services, including low-barrier shelter. We’re working harder than ever to help our homeless neighbors, and we must do more.
From supporting homeless services by annually allocating over $15 million for safety and cleaning public spaces to investing over $115 million to support affordable housing development since 2021, every day, the City and its Homeless Engagement and Response Team (HEART) is working towards solutions that align with our values as a City.
While more than 80% of people who become homeless resolve out of it quickly by entering a homeless resource center and working with a case worker, a small percentage who are chronically homeless cannot due to factors, including mental health issues and substance use disorder.
This is why it has been vital to cultivate productive partnerships with county, state, and philanthropic partners. Collaborating to broaden resources across the homeless services and criminal justice systems will make a long-awaited impact for Utahns.
