I can see the problems created by sports gambling in my peers, and I think it’s a bigger deal than most people assume.
The problem is a whole lot bigger than most people think. It's really easy for people to get addicted, especially with the extreme amount of advertising done by companies like DraftKings and Fanduel. The gambling companies are making an incredible amount of money off of people who think they can game the system. Even for people who don't plan on gambling (like myself), the constant intrusive ads are very annoying!
Some would argue that the sports gambling companies provide valuable tax revenue that justifies their downsides. However, reporter Eric Lipton complains that “the lobbyists were able to negotiate a bill that that doesn't benefit the citizens of Kansas that much (Davies).”
At the start, sports betting wasn’t considered as gambling because it was a game of skill. Many people assume that they know enough about sports to make bets that beat the odds.
When it comes to the topic of gambling, most of us will readily agree that it is dangerous. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of iGaming, or gambling done on one’s phone. While some are convinced that it creates more opportunities for addiction, others believe that it’s no different than someone visiting a casino or bookie.
There is a serious problem with sports betting in the United States. Billions of dollars are being wagered on sporting events. With the apps being so easy to use after being legalized, more and more people are becoming addicted to gambling. Beyond that, the leagues themselves push apps like DraftKings, making it even more likely for addictions to develop. Even the players themselves are becoming entangled with gambling scandals more and more often.
This article gives a ton of statistics about the sports betting industry in America. It really shows no sign of stopping as the increases continue to stack up at billions of dollars. Additionally, the article discusses how much of this is as a result of the apps being on phones. The vast majority of sports gambling is done online, and the impact these apps have is almost immeasurable.
This article is an interview between Dave Davies, an NPR reporter, and Eric Lipton, a New York Times reporter investigating sports betting in America. The source starts with a description of how sports betting got legalized. It was a long term push from a lot of gambling stakeholders, including an incredible amount of lobbying and corruption. One specific example includes a legislator from Kansas being bribed with fine whiskey and cigars. Even when it was legalized, lots of things are a write-off so the government doesn’t even get much out of it. They advertise to kids in college, which is very dubious, morally. The biggest issue with the apps is how easily accessible they are. The ability to gamble on sports anywhere, anytime, opens up so many doors and makes it very insidious.
This article describes the gambling market of the European Union. While it isn’t only focused on sports gambling, it’s still very useful to my inquiry. The European gambling market is far more mature and developed than the American, so it is a useful place to look for predictions of the future and ideas for regulators. The online market in the EU is growing rapidly, and they’re having trouble regulating apps run outside of the EU.

Great choice! Let’s dive into the differences between the sports gambling markets in the United States and the European Union. I’ll start by thinking aloud as a writer beginning to explore this topic.
First, I ask myself, what specific aspects of the sports gambling markets in the US and EU should I focus on? Hmm, I might consider looking into regulatory practices, market maturity, and cultural attitudes towards gambling. Each of these areas can provide insight into how these markets function and differ.
Next, I ponder, how have historical developments shaped these markets? The US recently legalized sports gambling, while the EU has a longer history with it. This could affect how established and regulated the markets are in each region. Maybe I should also explore how cultural differences impact gambling habits and regulations.
