Try this on Loveable - Demonstrating Writing Partners Cataloguing, Adding/Removing, and Assigning

Author: Paul Allison

Try this on Loveable to see our design for collecting and listing all Writing Partners. We will show you how the Manage Writing Partners page can be used by any user to add individual Writing Partners or groups of Writing Partners to their sidebar, which makes them available to use in any of our workspaces. We will also show you how a teacher can log in and assign individual and groups of Writing Partners to their students' sidebars. Each Writing Partner on the Writing Partners page has a brief description, tags that can be used to filter and find related Writing Partners, and a more link to take any user to see the prompt, as well as buttons to remix and add/remove. This page for managing Writing Partners also has a search box, a Topics drop-down that uses the tags, and a button to Create a New Writing Partner.

1.  START the wireframe. Please keep in mind that most of the content that we present here is made up, and just enough is functional to make clear how we want the design to work. With that in mind, we would love to hear any thoughts you have about the design elements of our wireframe.

2. Click Sarah's Login (Student) to start. Note that there are now two different views of the wireframe: Sarah's (Student) View and Dr. Bentum's (Teacher) View. Let's start by looking at Sarah's sidebar

3. Click on Start a new document

4. Click the sidebar icon in the top left corner of the Create/Edit Workspace (or of any of the workspaces).

5. Once the sidebar is open, take note of which Writing Partners are available to Sarah. The five Squad Writing Partners are always available to all users. Also note the My Most Used list, which populates in order for each user. Only the Squad is available to start for Sarah. Any Writing Partner that appears in the sidebar can be used in all three workspaces: Create/Edit, Read/Annotate, and Discuss/Chat. Also take note of the Manage Writing Partners button at the top.

6. Click the Manage Writing Partners button. All of the Writing Partners on the site are collected here. They are organized into genre groups (or some such logical category). Note that you can Search Writing Partners and that Writing Partners have tags and that you can filter by tags or Topics using the drop-down box in the center at the top. There is also a button on the top-right that will take you to set of pages that will guide you to Create a New Writing Partner.

Pretend to be Sarah and add a Group of Writing Partners and several individual Writing Partners. Note that Squad Writing Partners are always available and can't be removed. Users can Add other Writing Partners and Remove Writing Partners when they would like to or when they are asked to by a teacher.

Users can also navigate to the Manage Writing Partners page from their dashboards.

7. Toggle back and forth between adding and removing Writing Partners to see how this might work for a student. You can go back and forth by refreshing your browser and starting again on Sarah's Login.

Before going on to #8, Remove all Writing Partners and Groups from Sarah's Writing Partners page. This should leave her sidebar with only the Squad appearing, like this:

8. Start again (by refreshing your browser), and this time click on Dr. Bentum's Login (Teacher), and repeat steps #3, #4, and #5 above to see and manage the Writing Partners on Dr. Bentum's sidebar.

9.  Do this again after clicking Dr. Bentum's Login (Teacher):
Click on Start a new document > Click the sidebar icon >  Click the Manage Writing Partners button.

Once you are on Dr. Bentum's (Teacher) version of the Writing Partners page, notice that there is an extra box for assigning Writing Partners to students and classes. When a student or a number of students or a class or a number of classes are selected the options in each group and within the box for each Writing Partner change from Add/Remove to Assign/Remove. Dr. Bentum (or any teacher on our site) can manage their own Writing Partners in the Add/Remove view and control what Writing Partners appear on their students' sidebars from this page.

10. Now, let's assign groups and individual Writing Partners to Sarah's sidebar.

Select Sarah from the drop-down.

11. With Sarah selected, click Assign Groups and individual Writing Partners to Sarah's sidebar menu.

In this example, we have assigned two Writing Partners from the Admissions Essay group and the whole Habits of Mind group of Writing Partners.

12.  Let's see what it looks like to Sarah.

Refresh your browser to restart out Loveable preview of the wireframe. As you did before, click on Start a new document > Click the sidebar icon.

Before Dr. Bentum assigned these Writing Partners, Sarah only had the Squad available. See #7 above. Now you should see that two new groups of Writing Partners are available for Sarah to use in any of the workspaces that she chooses. Both Dr. Bentum and Sarah can manage which Writing Partners appear on Sarah's sidebar on the Manage Writing Partners page, They both can also learn more about what is available ther as well.
