The Effects of Epigenetic's through Generations

Author: Lafleche Jeannette Giasson

Giasson, Lafleche. New Leaves on the Tree: How Trauma Affects Inheritable Gene Expression. April 1, 2025.

Epigenetics is the study of how the environment and emotional stressors can alter gene expression. These alterations happen through something called "epigenetic tags, or chemical signals that attach to DNA to either silence or activate a gene, altering its expression." (Torgerson, 2023). These stressors or traumas can be inherited by affecting the epigenetic markers through the fetus, egg, or sperm. Sometimes these epigenetic changes can prepare a child from a different generation for a new environment, having a trait like resilience. But if that environment doesn't match the parent or grandparent, it can cause stress, anxiety, or chronic health issues.

My question that I researched about was 'Do we inherit our ancestors' pain or traits?'. This article was so interesting to me. I didn't know the term epigenetics was a thing, and this does help me gather more information about my question. Our parents and even grandparents pass these stressors on, just like hereditary diseases like diabetes or Down Syndrome.
