These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of WritingPartners.net and related services that link to these Terms (collectively, the “Services”). The Services are operated by Paul Allison, 116 Pinehurst Avenue, K43, New York, NY 10033, telephone 917-612-3006 (“Writing Partners,” “we,” “us,” or “our”).
Please read these Terms carefully. They describe how the Services may be used, how User Content may be handled, and the limits of our responsibilities.
“AI Output” means a response or other material generated with the assistance of an AI feature.
“School” means a school, school district, or other educational institution that authorizes access to the Services.
“Student” means a student who accesses the Services through a School.
“Teacher” means an educator who uses the Services to support instruction, review student work, or provide feedback.
“User” means a Student, Teacher, or other person authorized to use the Services.
“User Content” means material a User creates, submits, uploads, or shares through the Services, including documents, drafts, annotations, comments, discussion posts, prompts, AI conversations, and AI Output retained or associated with a User’s learning interactions through the Services.
“Writing Partner” means an AI-assisted feature available through the Services, including a Writing Partner configured by a Teacher or Student.
These Terms apply when you access or use the Services. If you use the Services for a School, you represent that you are authorized to do so. If a School or district has a separate written agreement with Writing Partners, that agreement controls over these Terms to the extent of any conflict concerning the School’s use of the Services or its data.
Student accounts are available only through a School; Students may not create accounts outside a school context. Before a Student uses the Services, the necessary School authorization and any parent, guardian, Student, or other notice, consent, or authorization required by law or an applicable agreement must be in place. School authorization may be used only where permitted and where the applicable requirements are met. Each party remains responsible for the legal obligations that apply to it.
A parent or guardian with a question about a Student account or information should contact the Student’s Teacher or School. You may also contact us at admin@writingpartners.net.
The Services may include learning workspaces and tools for:
Create/Edit: drafting, writing, revising, and reflection;
Read/Annotate: responding to texts and media, annotation, and close reading; and
Discuss/Chat: academic conversation, questions, and discussion.
The Services may also include peer feedback, Teacher tools, and AI-assisted Writing Partners. Depending on the feature, a Writing Partner may offer questions, prompts, suggestions, explanations, examples, summaries, or feedback intended to support learning.
AI assistants are software tools, not people. They do not have feelings, empathy, consciousness, personal experiences, or human judgment. AI Output may be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, biased, overly general, or inappropriate for a particular context. AI may misunderstand a User’s meaning, writing style, language, dialect, tone, or circumstances. Users should verify important factual claims and should not rely on AI Output as the sole basis for important educational or personal decisions.
Writing Partners’ AI features are not substitutes for Teachers, tutors, counselors, families, or other people. They are not designed or represented as:
a diagnostic tool for learning disabilities, mental-health conditions, or behavioral conditions;
a tool for determining a Student’s intelligence, character, future potential, or worth;
a reliable detector of cheating, authorship, plagiarism, or AI use, unless a specific feature is clearly described, validated, and subject to human review; or
a source of final grades, discipline, admissions, special-education eligibility, student placement, or other high-impact educational decisions.
Writing Partners does not make AI Output the sole or determinative basis for high-impact decisions about Students. Schools and educators remain responsible for instructional, evaluative, and other educational decisions involving their Students.
Where AI-assisted features are available, we will endeavor to make clear that responses are generated with AI assistance, may be incorrect or unsuitable, and may be reviewed by a Teacher or authorized School personnel as described in the Services, the Privacy Policy, and applicable agreements. Each AI-assisted response will be clearly labeled as AI-generated or AI-assisted. Students may question, revise, reject, or discuss AI feedback.
Writing Partners are intended to encourage Student thinking, authorship, revision, and reflection—not to produce finished work for submission as a Student’s own. Users must follow applicable School rules and academic-integrity requirements.
Teachers may make particular Writing Partners available to Students in their classes. Students may choose whether to use an available Writing Partner and may select or deselect available assistants where the Services provide that choice. Teacher- or Student-created Writing Partners, their instructions, and their attached materials may affect AI Output. We cannot guarantee that every response will be accurate, complete, appropriate, or aligned with a particular instructional goal.
We will work to evaluate AI features for educational usefulness, reliability, age appropriateness, safety, and foreseeable misuse. We may test, revise, limit, pause, or remove a feature when we identify material risks, unacceptable performance, or harms that cannot be adequately mitigated. We may also seek input from educators, Students, families, accessibility experts, and affected communities when reasonably practicable.
Users may report AI Output they believe is unsafe, inaccurate, biased, offensive, unfair, or harmful through available reporting tools or by contacting admin@writingpartners.net. Students should not include unnecessary sensitive personal information in AI prompts or other User Content.
Users must use the Services only as authorized and for educational purposes supported by the Services. Users must keep account credentials confidential and promptly report suspected unauthorized account access to their Teacher or to admin@writingpartners.net.
You may not:
use the Services to harass, threaten, stalk, discriminate against, or harm another person;
use information obtained through the Services to contact, advertise to, solicit, or sell to another User, or for unrelated commercial activity;
upload or share content that you do not have the right to use, that unlawfully discloses another person’s private information, that defames another person, that infringes another person’s rights, or that is otherwise unlawful;
upload or transmit malware, spam, or other material intended to disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorized access to the Services or another person’s systems;
circumvent or interfere with security features, access controls, or technical limits of the Services; or
copy, distribute, or use Writing Partners’ materials or another User’s User Content for commercial purposes without permission.
Users should avoid including personal information about themselves or others unless it is reasonably necessary for the educational activity and appropriate to share.
You retain any rights you have in the User Content you create. You are responsible for your User Content and represent that you have the rights and permissions needed to submit it and to allow the uses described in these Terms.
You grant Writing Partners a limited, non-exclusive license to host, store, reproduce, display, and distribute your User Content as reasonably necessary to operate and provide the Services. This includes making User Content available to the relevant Student, Teacher, class, School, or other authorized Users according to the Services’ settings; enabling feedback and collaboration; maintaining, securing, and supporting the Services; and processing material through an AI feature when a User requests or uses that feature.
Writing Partners may allow service providers to process User Content only as needed to provide, secure, maintain, or support the Services, subject to applicable agreements and the Privacy Policy. When a User makes an AI-assisted request, the information needed to generate a response may be sent to the applicable AI provider. Depending on the feature and request, that information may include documents, drafts, annotations, selected text, comments, discussion posts, prompts, instructions, attached materials, or prior interactions needed for context.
Writing Partners does not use Student or Teacher content to train or fine-tune Writing Partners’ AI systems or third-party general-purpose AI models.
Writing Partners may use de-identified or aggregated information for lawful purposes, including research, service improvement, and evaluation, as described in the Privacy Policy. Research use of User Content is subject to the Policy’s safeguards and applicable agreements, including any required review or determination, permissions, limits on access to identifiable information, and steps to reduce re-identification risk. This section does not grant permission that is required to be obtained separately under applicable law or an applicable School agreement.
We may make technical changes needed to display, store, secure, or transmit User Content through the Services. Retention, deletion, and any permitted research use of User Content are described in the Privacy Policy and applicable School agreements. The license in this section ends when the relevant content is deleted from active use, except for copies retained as described in the Privacy Policy, for legal or security purposes, or as otherwise permitted by law or applicable agreement.
You may not use another User’s User Content beyond the educational and collaborative purposes enabled by the Services or permitted by its creator, the relevant School, and applicable law. Writing Partners’ protocols, descriptions, prompts, software, and other materials are owned by Writing Partners or its licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws.
Our Privacy Policy explains the information the Services collect, how it is used and shared, how service providers and AI providers process information, our security practices, and our retention and deletion practices. It is incorporated into these Terms by reference. If these Terms and the Privacy Policy conflict about privacy, collection, use, disclosure, retention, or deletion of information, the Privacy Policy controls. A School’s written agreement controls where it provides different applicable terms.
Writing Partners does not display third-party advertising in the Services. We do not sell, rent, or trade Student or Teacher personal information; use personal information for behavioral or targeted advertising; share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising; or conduct cross-site tracking. We do not use IP addresses to determine or infer a User’s location.
The Services use strictly necessary first-party cookies and technical information to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the Services. Writing Partners does not use cookies for advertising, behavioral advertising, cross-site tracking, or analytics, and does not use tracking pixels, advertising tags, social-media pixels, or third-party analytics scripts to track Users across websites or applications. More information is provided in the Privacy Policy.
Student work is automatically shared with the Student’s Teachers as described in the Privacy Policy and the Services. Teachers, authorized School or district personnel, and authorized Writing Partners administrators may access certain User Content or activity when reasonably necessary for educational supervision, service support, safety, moderation, security, quality assurance, or legal or contractual obligations, subject to applicable roles, settings, agreements, and law.
Teachers manage Student comments and replies. Teachers can review and report comments but may not be able to remove them; site administrators can remove content. Site administrators do not routinely moderate peer comments after posting. The Services include reporting tools for content or activity that may involve bullying, hate speech, sexual content, self-harm, threats, violence, or disclosure of personal information. Teachers or administrators may review a report and take appropriate action, such as requesting a correction, restricting access, or removing content.
AI chat may be filtered for unsafe content using safeguards associated with Writing Partners and with AI assistants created by Teachers or Students. Filters, reporting tools, and other safeguards may not identify or prevent every harmful or inappropriate comment, AI response, or use of the Services. If Writing Partners becomes aware that an AI feature has produced harmful or inappropriate material, we will work to address the issue, which may include correcting the application or configuration that contributed to it and, where appropriate, using the incident as a learning opportunity with the Students involved.
We do not promise to screen all User Content before it is posted. We may investigate reported concerns and restrict, revise, pause, or remove content or features where appropriate. We may track incidents and complaints and take corrective or other remedial action, including contacting an affected School or Teacher, when appropriate or required by law, contract, or the circumstances of the incident.
Reporting tools are not emergency services and should not be relied on for an immediate response. If someone may be in immediate danger, contact a trusted adult, School personnel, local emergency services, or an appropriate crisis resource.
Writing Partners may use information to operate, secure, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the Services, and may use de-identified or aggregated information for lawful purposes, including research and evaluation, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Before beginning a research project using User Content, Writing Partners will obtain review by an Institutional Review Board (IRB), or another appropriate written determination that IRB review is not required, and will obtain any School, parent or guardian, Student, or other permission required by law or the IRB. An IRB determination does not replace other legally required permissions.
Before retaining User Content for long-term research, Writing Partners will take reasonable steps to remove direct identifiers and reduce re-identification risk. Identifiable User Content will not be provided to research collaborators unless disclosure is authorized and appropriate protections are in place. Research findings may be published or shared only in a form designed not to identify individual Students. Research data will not be used to train or fine-tune a large language model unless that use is separately disclosed and authorized as required by law and applicable School agreements.
When you submit User Content, you represent that you have the rights and permissions needed for the uses described in these Terms, including permission to use third-party material and, where applicable, to include another person’s name, image, voice, or other identifying information. You also represent that your User Content does not violate another person’s rights or applicable law.
You are responsible for your communications and interactions with other Users, online or offline. Writing Partners is not required to resolve disputes between Users, although it may take action under these Terms or applicable School arrangements.
Teachers and Schools are responsible for determining whether and how the Services are appropriate for their Students, configuring available classroom settings, supervising Student use, and responding to Student conduct or safety concerns under applicable School policies and law.
If you believe content available through the Services infringes your copyright, send a written report to Paul Allison at allisonpr@gmail.com. Include your contact information, identification of the copyrighted work and the material you believe is infringing, where it appears in the Services, and the statements and authorization required by applicable copyright law. We may remove or restrict access to material and take other appropriate action in response to a report.
We may suspend or terminate access to all or part of the Services, remove User Content, or take other appropriate action if we reasonably believe that a User has violated these Terms, a School agreement, or applicable law; that an account or content presents a safety or security concern; or that action is needed to protect Users, Schools, Writing Partners, or others. Where appropriate, we may coordinate with the relevant Teacher or School.
You may stop using the Services at any time. Account closure, deletion, and retention of information are handled as described in the Privacy Policy and applicable School agreements. Sections that by their nature should continue after access ends—including provisions concerning intellectual property, disclaimers, liability, and dispute resolution—will survive to the extent applicable.
THE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. WRITING PARTNERS DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, SECURE, OR COMPATIBLE WITH EVERY DEVICE OR SYSTEM; THAT USER CONTENT OR AI OUTPUT WILL BE ACCURATE OR COMPLETE; OR THAT EVERY HARMFUL OR INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT ITEM WILL BE DETECTED OR REMOVED.
Nothing in these Terms excludes a warranty or right that cannot lawfully be excluded.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, PAUL ALLISON AND WRITING PARTNERS’ SERVICE PROVIDERS, AFFILIATES, AND THEIR RESPECTIVE OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOSS OF DATA, GOODWILL, OR PROFITS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THE SERVICES OR THESE TERMS, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE TOTAL LIABILITY OF PAUL ALLISON AND THE PERSONS IDENTIFIED ABOVE FOR CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE SERVICES OR THESE TERMS WILL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT, IF ANY, YOU PAID TO USE THE SERVICES IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM.
These limits do not apply where prohibited by law and do not limit liability that cannot legally be limited.
To the extent permitted by law, an adult User or organization using the Services agrees to defend and indemnify Paul Allison and Writing Partners’ service providers, affiliates, and their respective officers, employees, and agents against third-party claims, losses, and reasonable expenses arising from that adult User’s or organization’s unlawful use of the Services, violation of these Terms, or User Content submitted in violation of these Terms.
This section does not require a Student to indemnify Writing Partners except to the extent permitted by applicable law, and does not apply to the extent a claim results from Writing Partners’ own unlawful conduct.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Subject to applicable law, disputes relating to these Terms or the Services will be brought in the state or federal courts located in White Plains, New York, and the parties consent to those courts’ jurisdiction and venue.
Any deadline for bringing a claim will be governed by applicable law. Nothing in these Terms shortens a deadline where such a limitation is prohibited or unenforceable.
We may update these Terms by posting a revised version with a new “Last Updated” date. If a change materially affects Users, we will provide notice through the Services or another appropriate method. Continued use after the updated Terms take effect means the User agrees to the revised Terms, to the extent permitted by law. If consent is required for a change, we will seek it as required.
If we do not enforce a provision of these Terms, that does not waive our right to enforce it later. If a court finds a provision unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in effect, and the court may modify the provision only to the extent needed to make it enforceable.
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any applicable School agreement, govern use of the Services.
