Title: SAVED SAFE.(BOOK ONE, pages 133 – 139) Laymon, Kiese. “Book One, Pages 103-153,” Long Division, Scribner Book Company, 2013, 2021.
“I ain’t dead, Grandma.” I looked at Grandma eyes. “I ain’t dead, am I? Tell the truth.” “Naw, baby,” she told me. “You was just free for a little while.” She reached for my hand and helped me get up.I asked Grandma why she let them hold me under for so long. She claimed that as soon as they dunked my head the third time, I started going into a fit. I put the plush robe on and stood there thinking and looking at the folks in the semicircle for the first time. This funny-looking oldhead in a robe similar to mine, but a little more old-school, was there too. He was in the back of the crowd, pumping his fist, rubbing the sweat off his old bald head, licking his lips, nodding his head side to side, looking at everyone else.

This plan seems to outline a series of scenes for a novel, focusing on a character named City and their experience with a baptism. Here’s what I notice that might relate to your novel:
1. Opening Scene: City appears to be making a connection with the audience, questioning their identity with “I ain’t dead grandma, am I?” This suggests a theme of introspection and existential questioning.
2. Scenes 1 & 2: There’s a focus on family, particularly the relationship with Grandma, who smiles before City gets baptized. The act of baptism might symbolize a rite of passage or transformation.
3. Scenes 3 & 4: City experiences a flashback and is helped by Grandma, suggesting themes of memory and support. The repeated question about being “dead” implies a struggle with understanding their state of being or reality.
4. Scene 5 & Closing Scene: There’s a sense of community with people gathering around a circle, and City ends by looking at the camera, reflecting on life and death.
This plot layout points to themes of identity, family, transformation, and existential inquiry, which could parallel your novel’s exploration of these ideas. What aspects of the novel do you see reflected here, and how do you think they enhance the story?

So, looking at the scene you described, it seems like this man is just caught up in the energy of the crowd. He’s back there, really feeling the vibe—pumping his fist, which shows he’s all kinds of excited and maybe even cheering on something he believes in. The fact that he’s rubbing the sweat off his old bald head tells me it’s probably a hot environment, both in temperature and mood. Licking his lips and nodding his head side to side, he’s just soaking it all in, connecting with the folks around him.
Now, when it comes to excitement, it’s often about being in the moment. He’s looking at everyone else, maybe feeling that collective energy that just gets you going. You ever been somewhere, like a concert or a rally, and just felt that rush from being part of something bigger? That’s this man right now. He’s fully present, engaging with the scene, and letting that thrill wash over him. It’s like he’s feeding off the crowd’s energy and giving some of his own back.
What do you think could be driving his excitement? Is it the people, the event, or something personal to him? Hit Reply and let me know what path you want to take. Once you save your reply, hit Reply with AI, choose me again, and we can explore this topic further together.
