I am not the biggest football watcher, but I was invested in this game. This was the first game of football I have ever watched. I am normally in the superbowl for the halftime show, which I will talk about later, but I was focused last night. There were over 60 people at my house last night watching together and the sense of community in Philly was real as we gasped over the difference in rushing yards. It was so cool to be watching the game with family and friends and people from all over the globe. It made me really happy and felt like I was a part of something bigger than myself.
Throughout the last week at my Philly public high school, there has been discussions about the superbowl, almost constantly. “Are you going to broad street?” Was a question asked just as many times as, “Did you do the math homework?” As the Eagles score climbed throughout the game, more and more people streamed onto Broad. According to an article on abc27 by George Stockburger, “– Thousands of Eagles fans ha[d] taken to the streets of Philadelphia to celebrate their Super Bowl LIX win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Photos on social media show[ed] fireworks being set off on Broad Street as fans spilled into the streets to celebrate the 40-22 win in New Orleans. “Use caution traveling and watch for pedestrians,” said the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management on Sunday night.” Many of my friends ended up on Broad and the joy could be felt throughout the city. I fell asleep with a smile on my face and to the sound of fireworks last night.
My favorite part of the superbowl forever has been the halftime show, and last night did not disappoint. As Kendrick rapped about the racial injustice and his backup dancers formed the shape of the flag of the USA, people felt the power of his show. As he dueted with SZA on All the Stars and Luther in a fairly tame and typical manner for a halftime show, fans waited with bated breath for Not Like Us. Kendrick’s hit song of 2024. An article from the NYT states, “And then, that smile. What a smile. His subsequent performance was jubilant and a bit naughty. When he rapped, “Say, Drake, I hear you like ’em young,” he looked hard into the camera while motioning downward with his left hand, as if patting the head of a child. He rapped the line naming Drake’s associates and their flaws.” This is considered to be the “victory lap” of Kendrick over the beef with Drake in 2024 as Serena Williams made a cameo doing a dance that she had received criticism for in the past.
Another shocking thing happened during the performance, but it was not televised. One of Kendrick’s dancers, as the end of the show neared, hopped up onto the car that was on stage. This was not supposed to happen. In the car he unfurled a flag that was a combination of the flag of Gaza and the flag of Sudan with a heart and a fist. Security guards immediately came after the dancer and they managed to get one lap holding the flag before they were tackled and hauled off of the field. It happened during TV off, it was confirmed that he was one of the cast members, however there were 400 of them and it is still unclear who exactly it was that held the flag. This was an extremely brave demonstration and a smart way to get a lot of public attention. I think it is extremely important and worth talking about and shedding light on.
Circling back to the football game, the Eagles were extremely close to getting a scoragami, a score in football that has never happened before, in their defeat of the Chiefs. It was also rookie Cooper DeJeans birthday and his first year in the NFL, it was a super incredible experience for everybody on the team. The Birds had a 27-0 lead in the first half of the game and it only grew as the game progressed. The thrill was incredible as Pat Maholmes got sack after sack, and Saquon Barkley was stopped over and over again, as the rest of the Eagles offense flew by. The team's defense was on fire as well and once it was clear that they were going to win, they slacked off a bit, which was why the Chiefs got any touchdowns at all in the last quarter. Overall it was a beautiful moment for the city and for history.
