Malaya Ulan (Freedom Rain in Tagalog) is a sixteen-year-old Filipino-American Philadelphia based artivist. Her identity as a Filipino American translates into her art forms and the work she does with her art. Malaya Ulan now serves as the Historian for her high schools NHS branch. Ulan is a multidimensional poet who merges her poetry with dance, film, and visual art. Ulan is this year’s Youth Poet Laureate of Philadelphia (2024-2025). She has performed at the Barnes Foundation, Outlet Dance Festival, MECA (Houston), Studio 34, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, Asian Arts Initiative, Painted Bride, Movement Research at Judson Dance Theatre, Festive Walk Philippines and more. She collaborates with her mother in a collective, AniMalayaWorks.
Malaya Ulan was awarded the Scholastic Art and Writing gold key for the Philadelphia region in 2023 and first place in the open category for the Youth Film Awards at WHYY for her poetic film Anthem Erased. She has also participated in Scribe and WHYY programs/internships. Ulan has co-produced a collection of poetry and writings, De-Scribing, with her mother. She recently has just released her solo poetry collection, Ulan- When my Tears Turn Into Roses. Her poetry accompanied by paintings has been exhibted at Da Vinci Art Alliance Exhibit and Imperfect Gallery.
This past year Ulan spoke at the United Nation Headquarters at the main conference on Small Arms and Light Weapons. This conference happens every six years and she was one of three youth amongst about 200 delagates and representatives from different countries.
